Breakaway is a studio album by South Florida blues rock band Dark Horse Flyer. Released on September 30, 2014, Bill Meredith for the Palm Beach Post named Breakaway one of his noteworthy "favorite local 2014 CDs."[1]

History[edit]

Production[edit]

Don Mularz produced the album, while Scott Lane served as executive producer. Beth Cohen, who has worked with artists such asBarbra Streisand and Kelly Clarkson, contributed duet and backing vocals.[2] Bernie Grundman in Los Angeles[2] mastered the disc,[3]and according to the band, they sequenced the tracks "like we would for a live set."[4]

Dark Horse Flyer - Evil Woman (Official Music Video) (Oct 8, 2014)
The track "Evil Woman" had been written years before by Dark Horse Flyer member Don Mularz and Olie Olsen, who had been keyboardist with Mularz's band Split Decision. The song had never been recorded or performed live prior to the recording process for Breakaway.[5] Stated Mularz about the recording, "I originally played slide for my fills and lead, but [bandmember Scott Lane] and I agreed the song needed the grittier guitar sounds to match the energy, and the slide is now only in the bridge." Olsen also came in to contribute B3 organ riffs.[5]

Release[edit]

In early September 2014, the band released a music video for their single "Evil Woman," which had been filmed in Miami[6] with actress and model Mireille Segovia as the protagonist.[7]
The full-length debut was released on September 30, 2014 through Florida Street Records.[6][5] They released the CD with a performance at Jazziz Jazz Club in Boca Raton in October, 2014.[8] The CD and download[3] would later be made available as two 12" vinyl LPs,[3][9] and as of February 2015, the band was offering "Evil Woman" as a free download.[10]

Bill Meredith for the Palm Beach Post on December 19, 2014 named Breakaway one of his noteworthy "favorite local 2014 CDs."[1]He noted in a later review that "the veteran South Florida members of Dark Horse Flyer spared no expense" on the album,[9] and opined that the band members "seem intent on filling the void of the recently-disbanded Allman Brothers Band, and in cases like the opening instrumental 'Hurricane,' they approach such heights."[9]
